Welcome to the project website for the Route 12 / Main Street Bridge!
The Route 12 / Main Street bridge was built in 1961 and consists of dual corrugated metal plate culverts. The culverts pass Beaver Brook underneath the roadway. The culverts are in poor condition and require replacement to maintain their safety and function. The bridge is on the State of New Hampshire DOT Red List, a list of state-owned bridges requiring interim inspections due to poor condition and/or weight limit postings. These structures are inspected twice per year.
The City is replacing this bridge as part of the State's Municipal Bridge Aid Program. This program shares the cost of bridge repair/replacement between the community and the State. The State provides 80% of the funding, and the City 20%.
In 2014 the City hired Louis Berger to prepare preliminary and final construction plans for the bridge replacement. In the fall of 2017 the City entered into a contract with B.U.R. Construction LLC to replace the bridge. The culverts will be replaced with dual precast concrete box culverts. Utilities underneath the bridge will also be replaced. Following bridge construction, the roadway pavement in the immediate area will be rehabilitated.
The project is managed by the Keene Public Works Department - Engineering Division. Louis Berger will perform daily construction observation of the work. Questions and concerns regarding this project can be directed to the Public Works Department at 603-352-6550. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as the City works to replace this important piece of our transportation infrastructure.
As work progresses we will be keeping customers updated through press releases, postings on our social media sites as well as on the City’s webpage.
Today, Wednesday, May 2, 2018 the contractor will pave the temporary access road to Martell Ct. and begin partial removal of the traffic signal island at the southeast corner of the Rt. 12 / Rt. 101 intersection. Flaggers will be on site to direct traffic through the work zone.
On Thursday night (May 3, 2018) the contractor will install traffic control barriers and striping along Rt. 12 / Main St. Due to forecasted rain, this work may be delayed to Sunday night (May 6, 2018.)
Traffic pattern detours/changes:
- Main Street/Rt. 12 traffic: South of the Rt. 101 intersection, the three northbound lanes will be channeled into two lanes and shifted to the western side of the roadway. The two southbound lanes will be channeled into one lane. North of the Rt. 101 intersection, the three southbound lanes will be channeled into two lanes – one lane for left turns onto Rt. 101 East, and one for straight through and right turns onto Rt. 101 West.
- The current access to Martell Ct. at Rt. 12 / Main St. will be blocked for the duration of the project. The temporary access to Martell Ct. is available from Route 101 East. Detour signs will be posted to direct traffic into and out of this intersection. The detour involves use of the roundabouts at Main St./Marlboro St., and Route 101 at Winchester St.
Drivers should expect delays at the intersection of Rt. 12/Main St. and Rt. 101 for the duration of the project. Please allow additional time for travel. Roadway impacts are expected to last until mid-September. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as the City works to replace this important piece of our transportation infrastructure.
