Dog Licensing

You can renew or purchase dog licenses through the mail by sending your renewal request to the City Clerk's office, 3 Washington Street, Keene, NH 03431. Remember to provide the dog's current rabies certificate, spaying/neutering certificate, and submit with the attached license application, and applicable fee. Your license can also be renewed online using our Online Dog Licensing Portal.

  • When are dog licenses due?

A new adult dog should be licensed immediately, and a puppy can be licensed as soon as the puppy receives its first rabies shot. Dog Licenses must be renewed annually by April 30th.

  • What happens if I don't license my dog?

If you fail to license your dog, the Keene Police Department will issue a $25.00 civil forfeiture fine for each dog, which is due 15 days after the issued date.  The fine is due in addition to any accrued license and late fees.  If the forfeiture is not paid, the case will be disposed of in the Keene District Court.

To avoid receiving a notice of forfeiture, please license your dog by the April 30th deadline.  If you no longer have the dog or have moved from Keene, please notify the City Clerk's Office at 603-352-0133.

  • What is the annual fee to license my dog?

    • Spayed/neutered dogs and puppies under 7 months $7.50
    • Male and female dogs (not spayed or neutered) $10.00
    • Kennel License for 5 or more dogs $20.00
    • Senior Citizens $2.00 for the first dog, fees as above for additional dogs
    • Owners will be charged a late fee of $1.00 per month for each month (or partial month) during which the dog remains unlicensed, starting on June 1st.  (Late fees will be assessed in addition to the license fees noted)
  • How do I license my dog online?

Your license can be renewed online using our Online Dog Licensing Portal and searching by owner last name.

    1. Enter your last name and select the 'Search By' criteria that matches. Click Search.
    2. Select and 'View' the dog license you would like to renew.
    3. Click 'Renew'
    4. Confirm the selected fees with 'Select Fees'
    5. Click 'Make Payment'. It will forward you to our online payment portal.
    6. Enter your payment information.
    7. Submit online payment.*

*If you choose to use the online portal each dog is treated as a separate transaction subject to a $2.00 fee.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.  Please call our office for other options to pay by debit/credit card. Our telephone number is (603) 352-0133 ext. 2.

Online renewal will not be available for dogs with an expired rabies.  This information will display in the search results.

Holders of a kennel license (5 or more dogs) may renew online by renewing the license with the dog name "KENNEL" associated with their name.  If one or more dogs under the kennel license has an expired rabies, online renewal will not be an option.

If you have an issue using our online portal that is unrelated to the expiration of the rabies certificate, or would like to provide an update to the information on file with us, please contact us.  (The online 'Edit' feature displayed on our search screen is currently disabled.)
